Skull Absinthe Café Poster

This poster was taken from a postcard from the early 20th century. When viewed from a distance, you see a skull in the center of the poster. But the closer you get, you see two men sitting at a table. The original postcard print is somewhat grainy, so the poster has little clarity, as seen in the images.

At the top of the poster are the words UNE HISTOIRE SANS PAROLES (A history without words), which are written, at its bottom, "On ne meurt pas, on se tue" (We do not die, we kill ourselves).

The original postcard was part of the anti-absinthe movement, which decried everything absinthe, blaming the popular alcohol for all social decay of the time. This uprising was considered the beginning of the Temperance Movement, which eventually banned absinthe in many European countries (most notably France) and the United States.
