This very popular spoon is commonly referred to is the "hearts" absinthe spoon due to the small cutouts in the center of its handle, which resemble four small hearts. Absinthe spoons like this one, are exact reproductions of the oldest of all absinthe spoon designs. Early absinthe spoons resembled what we would call a tea spoon today. This high quality stainless steel absinthe spoon is used to hold the sugar cube while preparing a traditional French or Swiss absinthe. Drinkers would turn the spoon upside down and lay it across the glass, the sugar cubes would them be placed within the "hearts" cutouts. This absinthe spoon is also one of our longest, allowing it accommodate most any glass. It is an eact reproduction of a middle 19th century absinte spoon.

A traditional absinthe is prepared by pouring an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, then placing the absinthe spoon on top of the glass and a sugar cube atop the spoon. Ice water is slowly dripped from a fountain, carafe or balancier onto the piece of sugar. The cold sugar water then drips from the spoon into the glass of absinthe releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood and anise. The combination also begins to turn milky white in color, as the water mixes with the anise.
